Last weekend I was able to visit Muir Woods, located just outside of San Francisco.  I have to say, it’s one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever visited.  It takes some patience (and nerve) to get there, as the narrow roads wind round and around as you creep your way up the mountain and back down into the valley.  The journey, however, is well worth it.
 
I knew the legendary redwoods would be impressive – but the scale and scope of the forest was even grander than I had anticipated.  The trees seem to disappear into the sky as you crane your neck to take in the view.  At heights of up to 252 feet, it’s difficult to comprehend how long they have been growing.  Some have been around as long as 1,000 years!  You take a breath in, and all you smell is clean.  There’s no bottling that scent.
 
And it’s just quiet.  Even with fellow tourists milling about and snapping pictures, there is an uncanny stillness.  There’s nothing to be heard but your own feet crunching along the path and the occasional critter scurrying along unseen.  The air is cool and welcoming, and it’s nearly impossible not to find yourself lost in thought.  I found myself pondering the humble beginnings of these majestic trees, and appreciating the foresight of those that were able to preserve them.  Mostly though, I was just happy to be there, walking along with my brother and sharing the experience with the person dearest to me in this world.
