You have your plane ticket, your visa has been approved, and you got your classes lined up… You’re good to go! Here are a few things to know about France that you won’t find in books.
1. Greetings: don’t be surprised if someone greets you with a kiss on each cheek. The perception of greetings is quite different: a hug will be considered more personal than a light kiss on the cheek. You will use the handshake in more formal situations, and between two men.
2. Private space: everything is smaller in France. The country, streets, cars, apartments… and your private space. Don’t be offended if someone stands close to you while talking or passes by close to you in the street and doesn’t apologize. It isn’t considered as an invasion of your private space.
3. Eating at a restaurant: the French love their food, they take the time to enjoy it, and your waiter will not rush you. So if you eat at a restaurant and are in a hurry, it is better to warn your server at the beginning! A tax for tipping is included in the price, so you can ‘extra-tip’ only if you were really happy about the service. Also, “entrées” means “starters” in French, do not get tricked!
4. Formality: students don’t call their teachers by their first name. Students-teachers relations are a little less casual. Overall, you will probably think that French culture is more formal.
5. Punctuality: being two minutes late is considered being on time. But it’s better if you keep your American punctuality!
6. Dress code: people often say the French dress fancy. I think they just obey a simple rule: don’t go to class in pajamas. Prefer the jeans/sneakers combination and stay away from sweat pants if possible.
7. Campus: most of the time there is no campus, and your university will just be downtown.
8. Transportation: you don’t need your car to go everywhere. Things are closer together, so you can either walk or use public transportation. And it is quite a blast to walk around Paris and France: take a look at the old buildings, get lost in the small streets, and discover small stores and cafés. You don’t need a car when you travel either: you can go almost anywhere in Europe using the bus, train, or airplane!
9. France ≠ Paris. It is much more! Paris is beautiful and full of history, but don’t hesitate to explore the rest of France on your weekends. You will discover different cultures, culinary specialties, lifestyles and landscapes depending on where you go.
