What is holding you back from going to college?  Is it financial matters?  If so, you have options.  So many people out there understand the need for money when pursuing an education.  They want to help you, but first you have to find them.  With the basics of understanding you can.

Here are the fundamentals:  scholarships, grants, savings, investments, loans and more.  The different paths you can take to finding the money out there for you.

 

                             Scholarships
The most common way of paying for colleges is scholarships.  In other words, free money.  To receive a scholarship you don’t need to be the fastest in track, the smartest in your class, you don’t need to be the president of every club in your school.  In other words, anyone can apply for a scholarship. 

 

Start with your high school
If you are in high school, talk to your counselor or check the school’s website.  Even if your school doesn’t have any scholarships, then talking to your school counselor and checking the website are good places to point you in the right direction.   But if you are not in high school still go to the high school counselor or website.  You might find that there are alumni scholarships available.

  

Go to your college
If you are just starting college or are already in college go to your financial aid department.  Talk to as many people as you can and you may find they each have different areas of expertise.  Each one will be able to give you a different idea to find you “free money.”  Your school has scholarships.  Apply for as many as you can.  It cost nothing, but you could receive a great deal in return. 

                                                   Surf the web
Go to Google and search for scholarships.  You will be astounded on how much comes up.  If you are part of a minority, female, race, age, etc, exploit it (even if you are only a small percent).  There are people out there that want to help you achieve your goals by helping you to receive your education. 

 

Grants
Once again this is free money, but this time from the government.  Every year fill out a FASFA either on the web or in a printout able version.  If you need help, again go to your counselor or financial aid department.  They are there to assist you, use these resources to your advantage. 

                            Savings
Start early.  Once you decide you want to go to college make sure to open a savings and place something in there every month that will fit your budget and don’t touch it.  Even if it’s only a dollar a month, every bit helps.  Search the banks and credit unions near you to see which has the best available offer in the terms of interest for your account.  Many might even have a program designed to help you save more for school. 

 

 

 

Certificates of Deposits (CDs)
There is also Certificates of Deposits (CDs), which is a sum of money put into an account for X amount of days that gives you maximum interest.  If the bank is FDIC insured for your amount up to $250,000 you have no need to worry that you will lose your money.  The only thing with CDs is that you will receive a fee if you touch the funds early.
